The cost of All-in-One (AIO) printers is falling drastically, and the Canon Pixma MP495 is one of the first to break triple digits with the $80 Pixma MP495. the device can print, scan, and copy wirelessly with the help of its 802.11b/g wireless feature, and we’re also a fan of its glossy black executive aesthetic. Granted, the print speed needs a speed boost, and the lack of an LCD screen on the front panel became irritatingly apparent during our lab testing, but we think it’s a worthwhile tradeoff for $80. Amateur photographers and business professionals will get more mileage out of the step-up models, but the MP495 delivers adequate results that meet the needs of the casual printer user.

DesignThe Pixma MP495 is part of Canon’s most recent round of consumer-level all-in-one printers and receives an updated look that’s both visually stunning and functional at the same time. in contrast to last year’s silver-and-black color scheme, the new lineup features a glossy black finish that repels fingerprints and gives the printer an executive suggestion.

Physically, the build retains the rounded edges and the small footprint at a manageable 18 inches wide, 13 inches deep, and 6 inches tall, but the MP495 keeps the cost low by departing from the classic LCD screen we saw on previous models, in lieu of a side panel with buttons for typical printing functions like start, stop, color vs. black and white, toggling between plain and photo paper sizes, and of course, a power button.

There’s also a dedicated “scan” button, although we’re unsure why Canon doesn’t also have one for copying. the lack of a dedicated LCD screen can be annoying if your printing habits lean toward multiple copies and making multiple settings adjustments, and during testing we found ourselves wishing for a preset favorites button that would allow you to autoprogram commonly used settings. Snapshot photographers will also loathe the lack of a memory card reader, a feature that is commonly found in most of the entry-level printers that come through CNET. that said, we stick by our recommendation of the MP495 if you plan to use it intermittently–frequent printers should consider a higher-level model with a display and extra features like an auto-document feeder for hands-free scans.

Two opposing trays control the paper handling: the input tray folds out of the top and can hold up to 150 sheets of plain 8.5-inch-by-11-inch paper, and an angled output tray on the bottom can only corral 50 sheets of paper but conveniently folds up into the device while not in use.

The scanner lid props open with a thin plastic arm to reveal a small two-ink cartridge bay underneath: one dye-based tricolor and another pigment black cartridge. Unfortunately, the trade-off for a printer with an inexpensive initial price tag is the cost of ink that you’ll need to purchase more frequently than a pricier model with a five- or even six-ink cartridge bay that separates the colors. Canon sells compatible cartridges for the MP495 at $20.99 for color and $15.99 for black, but you can save money in the long term by purchasing extra-large-capacity Canon cartridges that sell at a discounted price.

The Pixma MP870 prints, scans, and copies over a USB 2.0 connection by default, but you can also connect to a computer wirelessly with the built-in 802.11b/g print server inside. the easiest way to do this is by first establishing a wired connection, then adding wireless access by proxy, as indicated in the simple manual. Unfortunately, you can’t share the printer over a wired network, as the MP495 lacks an Ethernet port.

The printer comes with a driver installation CD that lets you choose between commonly used templates like standard, business, paper saving, and photo printing that adjust the type of media, paper size, and source. Additionally, the driver provides you with adjustments for borderless printing, vivid photos, grayscale prints, and even manual color intensities by numeral increments. It also features a pop-up print status monitor that shows the current job, document name, device owner, status, and a graphical representation of the ink cartridge levels. Conveniently, this pop-up automatically disappears once the job in queue is finished printing.

A Chinese scientific research center has built the fastest supercomputer ever made, replacing the United States as maker of the swiftest machine, and giving China bragging rights as a technology superpower.

The computer, known as Tianhe-1A, has 1.4 times the horsepower of the current top computer, which is at a national laboratory in Tennessee, as measured by the standard test used to gauge how well the systems handle mathematical calculations, said Jack Dongarra, a University of Tennessee computer scientist who maintains the official supercomputer rankings.

Although the official list of the top 500 fastest machines, which comes out every six months, is not due to be completed by Mr. Dongarra until next week, he said the Chinese computer “blows away the existing no. 1 machine.” He added, “We don’t close the books until Nov. 1, but I would say it is unlikely we will see a system that is faster.”

Officials from the Chinese research center, the National University of Defense Technology, are expected to reveal the computer’s performance on Thursday at a conference in Beijing. the center says it is “under the dual supervision of the Ministry of National Defense and the Ministry of Education.”

The race to build the fastest supercomputer has become a source of national pride as these machines are valued for their ability to solve problems critical to national interests in areas like defense, energy, finance and science. Supercomputing technology also finds its way into mainstream business; oil and gas companies use it to find reservoirs and Wall Street traders use it for superquick automated trades. Procter & Gamble even uses supercomputers to make sure that Pringles go into cans without breaking.

And typically, research centers with large supercomputers are magnets for top scientific talent, adding significance to the presence of the machines well beyond just cranking through calculations.

Over the last decade, the Chinese have steadily inched up in the rankings of supercomputers. Tianhe-1A stands as the culmination of billions of dollars in investment and scientific development, as China has gone from a computing afterthought to a world technology superpower.

“What is scary about this is that the U.S. dominance in high-performance computing is at risk,” said Wu-chun Feng, a supercomputing expert and professor at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University. “One could argue that this hits the foundation of our economic future.”

Modern supercomputers are built by combining thousands of small computer servers and using software to turn them into a single entity. In that sense, any organization with enough money and expertise can buy what amount to off-the-shelf components and create a fast machine.

The Chinese system follows that model by linking thousands upon thousands of chips made by the American companies Intel and Nvidia. But the secret sauce behind the system — and the technological achievement — is the interconnect, or networking technology, developed by Chinese researchers that shuttles data back and forth across the smaller computers at breakneck rates, Mr. Dongarra said.

“That technology was built by them,” Mr. Dongarra said. “They are taking supercomputing very seriously and making a deep commitment.”

The Chinese interconnect can handle data at about twice the speed of a common interconnect called InfiniBand used in many supercomputers.

For decades, the United States has developed most of the underlying technology that goes into the massive supercomputers and has built the largest, fastest machines at research laboratories and universities. some of the top systems simulate the effects of nuclear weapons, while others predict the weather and aid in energy research.

In 2002, the United States lost its crown as supercomputing kingpin for the first time in stunning fashion when Japan unveiled a machine with more horsepower than the top 20 American computers combined. the United States government responded in kind, forming groups to plot a comeback and pouring money into supercomputing projects. the United States regained its leadership status in 2004, and has kept it, until now.

At the computing conference on Thursday in China, the researchers will discuss how they are using the new system for scientific research in fields like astrophysics and bio-molecular modeling. Tianhe-1A, which is housed in a building at the National Supercomputing Center in Tianjin, can perform mathematical operations about 29 million times faster than one of the earliest supercomputers, built in 1976.

For the record, it performs 2.5 times 10 to the 15th power mathematical operations per second.

Mr. Dongarra said a long-running Chinese project to build chips to rival those from Intel and others remained under way and looked promising. “It’s not quite there yet, but it will be in a year or two,” he said.

He also said that in November, when the list comes out, he expected a second Chinese computer to be in the top five, culminating years of investment.

“The Japanese came out of nowhere and really caught people off guard,” Mr. Feng said. “With China, you could see this one coming.”

Steven J. Wallach, a well-known computer designer, played down the importance of taking the top spot on the supercomputer rankings.

“It’s interesting, but it’s like getting to the four-minute mile,” Mr. Wallach said. “The world didn’t stop. This is just a snapshot in time.”

The research labs often spend weeks tuning their systems to perform well on the standard horsepower test. But just because a system can hammer through trillions of calculations per second does not mean it will do well on the specialized jobs that researchers want to use it for, Mr. Wallach added.

The United States has plans in place to make much faster machines out of proprietary components and to advance the software used by these systems so that they are easy for researchers to use. But those computers remain years away, and for now, China is king.

“They want to show they are no. 1 in the world, no matter what it is,” Mr. Wallach said. “I don’t blame them.”

In last week’s blog, “Better Troubleshooting Capabilities with Windows 7 Event Viewer,” I introduced you to some of the new features in Microsoft Windows 7’s Event Viewer and told you that these new features make the new tool far superior to its XP predecessor. as I mentioned, in addition to the new interface, Microsoft designed Windows 7’s Event Viewer to provide you with more meaningful, actionable, and well-documented events in order to provide better information for troubleshooting. Recently, I had an opportunity to put Windows 7’s Event Viewer to the test.

A friend mentioned that his one-year-old Windows 7 system was taking much longer to boot than it used to. I explained to him that Microsoft had done a lot of work to make Windows 7 boot up much faster than previous versions of the operating system but that slightly slower boot times were inevitable. as you add more applications and utilities, it will, of course, take a bit longer to boot up the system.

While my friend agreed with that statement, he was adamant that his system was taking much longer to boot up than was acceptable — he estimated that on a regular basis it was taking close to two minutes to boot up! While that might have been more common during the Windows 2000 or XP eras, I agreed that what he was enduring was probably longer than it should have been. (Keep in mind that there are hundreds of variables that can come into play that affect boot time, such as processor speed, memory speed, hard disk speed, as well as the types of applications and drivers that run during startup.)

I arranged to go over to his place and help him troubleshoot and fix his slow-booting Windows 7 system. as it turned out, it was a pretty simple procedure, and we had his system booting up much quicker in no time at all. All I had to do was delve into Windows 7’s Event Viewer, tap in to the correct log, and create a Custom View to ferret out the correct Event IDs, and then the problem and solution became readily apparent.

In this edition of the Windows Desktop Report, I’ll show you how to use some of the new features in Windows 7’s Event Viewer to investigate the boot time and track down issues that can cause a slowdown in the boot process.

Windows 7’s Event Viewer includes a new category of event logs called Applications and Services Logs, which includes a whole host of subcategories that track key elements of the operating system. the majority of these subcategories contain an event log type called Operational that is designed to track events that can be used for analyzing and diagnosing problems. (Other event log types that can be found in these subcategories are Admin, Analytic, and Debug; however, describing them is beyond the scope of this article.)

Now, within the operating system section is a subcategory titled Diagnostic-Performance with an Operational log that contains a set of a Task Category called Boot Performance Monitoring. the Event IDs in this category are 100 through 110. by investigating all the Event ID 100 events, you will be able to find out exactly how long it took to boot up your system every time since the day you installed Windows 7. by investigating all the Event ID 101 thru 110 events, you will be able to identify all instances where boot time slowed down.

You can find and launch Event Viewer by opening the Control Panel, accessing the System and Security category, selecting the Administrative Tools item, and double-clicking the Event Viewer icon. However, you can also simply click the Start button, type Event in the Start Search box, and press Enter once Event Viewer appears and the top of the results display.

Once you have Event Viewer up and running, you can, of course, drill down through the Applications and Services Logs and locate the Diagnostic-Performance Operational log and begin manually looking through the events recorded in the log. However, you can save yourself time and energy by taking advantage of the new Custom View feature, which is essentially a filter that you can create and save.

To do so, pull down the Action menu and select the Create Custom View command. when you see the Create Custom View dialog box, leave the Logged option set at the default value of any Time and select all the Event level check boxes. next, select the by Log option button, if it is not already selected, and click the dropdown arrow. then, drill down through the tree following the path: Applications and Services Logs | Microsoft | Windows | Diagnostics-Performance. when you open the Diagnostics-Performance branch, select the Operational check box, as shown in Figure A.

To continue, type 100 in the Includes/Excludes Event IDs box, as shown in Figure B, and then click OK.

When you see the Save Filter to Custom View dialog box, enter a name, as shown in Figure C, and click OK.

You’ll now repeat these steps and create another Custom View, and this time, you’ll type 101-110 in the Includes/Excludes Event IDs box and name it Boot Degradation.

To investigate your Windows 7 system’s boot time, select Boot Time in the Custom Views tree and then sort the Date and Time column in ascending order. when you do, you’ll see a complete history of every time you have booted your system since the day you installed Windows 7. In Figure D, you can see that I have hidden the Console Tree and the Action Pane to focus on the events.

As you can see, the first recorded Boot Time on my sample system was 67479 milliseconds in October 2009. Dividing by 1,000 tells me that it took around 67 seconds to boot up. Of course, this was the first time, and a lot was going on right after installation. For example, drivers were being installed, startup programs were being initialized, and the SuperFetch cache was being built. by December 2009 the average boot time was around 37 seconds.

In any case, by using the Boot Time Custom View, you can scroll through every boot time recorded on your system. Of course, keep in mind that there will be normal occurrences that may lengthen the boot time, such as when updates, drivers, and software is installed.

Now, if you click the Details tab, you’ll see the entire boot process broken down in an incredible amount of detail, as shown in Figure E. (You can find more information about the boot process in the “Windows On/Off Transition Performance Analysis” white paper.) However, for the purposes of tracking the boot time, we can focus on just three of the values listed on the Details tab.

MainPathBootTime represents the amount of time that elapses between the time the animated Windows logo first appears on the screen and the time that the desktop appears. Keep in mind that even though the system is usable at this point, Windows is still working in the background loading low-priority tasks.

BootPostBootTime

BootPostBootTime represents the amount of time that elapses between the time that the desktop appears and the time that you can actually begin using the system.

Of course, BootTime is the same value that on the General tab is called Boot Duration. this number is the sum of MainPathBootTime and BootPostBootTime. something that I didn’t tell you before is that Microsoft indicates that your actual boot time is about 10 seconds less that the recorded BootTime. the reason is that it usually takes about 10 seconds for the system to reach an 80-percent idle measurement at which time the BootPostBootTime measurement is recorded.

To investigate instances that cause Windows 7 system’s boot time to slow down, select Boot Degradation in the Custom Views tree and then sort Event ID column in ascending order. Each Event ID, 101 through 110, represents a different type of situation that causes degradation of the boot time.

While there are ten different Event IDs here, not all of them occur on all systems and under all circumstances. as such, I’ll focus on the most common ones that I have encountered and explain some possible solutions.

Event ID 101

Event ID 101 indicates that an application took longer than usual to start up. this is typically the result of an update of some sort. as you can see in Figure F, the AVG Resident Shield Service took longer than usual to start up right after an update to the virus database. If you look at the details, you can see that it took about 15 seconds for the application to load (Total Time), and that is about 9 seconds longer than it normally takes (Degradation Time).

An occasional degradation is pretty normal; however, if you find that a particular application is being reported on a regular basis or has a large degradation time, chances are that there is a problem of some sort. as such, you may want to look for an updated version, uninstall and reinstall the application, uninstall and stop using the application, or maybe find an alternative.

(In the case of my friend’s Windows 7 system, there were several applications that were identified by Event ID 101 as the cause of his system slowdown. Uninstalling them was the solution, and he is currently seeking alternatives.)

Event ID 102

Event ID 102 indicates that a driver took longer to initialize. again, this could be the result of an update. However, if it occurs regularly for a certain driver or has a large degradation time, you should definitely look in to a newer version of the driver. If a new version is not available, you should uninstall and reinstall the driver.

Event ID 103

Event ID 103 indicates that a service took longer than expected to start up, as shown in Figure G.

Services can occasionally take longer to start up, but they shouldn’t do so on a regular basis. If you encounter a service that is regularly having problems, you can go to the Services tool and experiment with changing the Startup type to Automatic (Delayed Start) or Manual.

Event ID 106

Event ID 106 indicates that a background optimization operation took longer to complete. on all the Windows 7 systems that I investigated, this event identified the BackgroundPrefetchTime as the culprit, as shown in Figure H. since the Prefetch cache is a work in progress, this should not really represent a problem.

On Nov. 5, 2010, Clemson and South Carolina players will strap on their helmets, pull their jerseys over their shoulder pads and prepare to square off in the Palmetto State Showdown in Greenville.

Now if you stopped reading this after that sentence and immediately went to your computer to post a message about how stupid I am, you jumped the gun. (There’ll be plenty of time to post a message about how stupid I am once you read the entire column.)

I am fully aware that the Tigers and Gamecocks don’t meet on the gridiron until Nov. 27, and I’m also confident they meet at Memorial Stadium.

But before more than 80,000 football fans mosey into Death Valley to watch their schools collide, the teams will meet in another collision sport 22 days earlier.

Clemson and USC each have ice hockey teams, and they’ll square off Nov. 5, 10 p.m, at the Bi-Lo Center.

These are club teams, so you won’t see any pep rallies surrounding the game or the presidents of the two schools make a friendly wager on the outcome.

Still, the game is yet another example of how an “alien” sports such as ice hockey has been able to develop a toehold in the state of South Carolina.

On Thursday I was at the Bi-Lo Center to watch the debut of the Greenville Road Warriors. they are the Upstate’s newest entry in the ECHL, a minor league equivalent in quality to what AA baseball is to the big leagues.

On Oct. 12 the Road Warriors hosted the South Carolina (North Charleston) Stingrays in an exhibition, and roughly 4,000 fans showed up for a glorified practice.

Two nights ago the regular season officially began, with Greenville beating the Florida Everblades, 4-1.

More than 4,500 patrons paid full price to enjoy the evening — and I’m guessing many of those folks, like myself, have never, ever played ice hockey.

Still, if you love football it’s pretty easy to fall in love with hockey because it is definitely a contact sport.

Heck, if you like NASCAR you’d probably like hockey. it has plenty of high-speed crashes.

I suspect there were several members of Clemson’s hockey team (and maybe even some USC players) watching the Road Warriors play on Thursday. And I imagine a few of them likely didn’t grow up with a strong hockey background.

But they learned to love it — and to play it.

Of course football is king in the Palmetto State, and that will never change.

But the Tiger and Gamecock amateurs — along with the pros playing out of Greenville and Charleston — are showing that there’s a place for another high speed, high-impact sport in Carolina.

Q: I’ve been thinking about using one of those programs that you see on TV that claim they can speed up my computer. Do they work? – Paula

A: The #1 complaint that we hear in the computer service business is ‘my computer is running too slowly.’

If you have a computer that’s six months old or older, the likelihood that it runs as fast as the day you got it is nearly zero (unless you never use it).

The reasons for this common performance degradation vary, but in general it’s a combination of what you have installed and where you have been on the Internet.

The television commercials prey on those looking for instant gratification for a fairly complex problem.

Most of these so-called services that you see advertised claim to be ‘Registry cleaners’ because the Registry controls every aspect of how a Windows-based computer runs.

Think of the Windows Registry like the registry in a hotel: it’s supposed to keep track of who’s in which room, for how long, what their preferences might be, any wake-up calls requested, what charges have been accrued during the stay, etc.

If things get mixed up in the hotel’s registry, the hotel doesn’t run very smoothly and the same goes for your computer.

And just like every hotel has its own unique set of guests and issues making their registry one-of-a-kind, your computer’s Registry is unique to your combination of hardware and software.

The Windows Registry is a very complex system and to date, no automated process has ever proven to be 100% effective (none of us computer guys would have much to do if they really worked that well).

The unfortunate actuality of Registry cleaners is that they often cause more damage to an already fragile situation (we see the results of this in our stores almost daily).

The worst thing that you can do to a computer that is already unstable or running really slowly is to install additional software. whenever you install any program into your computer, it must add more entries into your Registry in order for Windows to be able to run it (often adding fuel to the fire).

After this question came in, I decided to test a handful of the Web sites that claim they can speed up your computer over the Internet to evaluate what they actually are doing.

I started with one that you see on television commercials around the clock that shows lots of what appear to be common folk proclaiming the merits of the system.

To really test the honesty of these sites, I decided to take a brand new machine that only had Windows installed and have it ‘evaluated.’ Because this was a custom-built computer from one of our vendors, I knew that it did not have any of the usual trial-ware or other junk common in commercially sold computers (which means that the Registry was pristine).

When I went to the Web site, it offered to install a free scanner to tell me if I had any problems. once installed, the scanner took less than 30 seconds to report to me an astonishing thing: I had 223 issues with my Registry!

Of course, I knew that this was erroneous, so I declined its offer to help (for $40) and used the uninstaller to remove the program.

Just for good measure, I decided to manually inspect the Registry to see if it had in fact properly removed itself, and found four sets of Registry keys that were not removed.

When a ‘Registry cleaner’ can’t even uninstall itself cleanly, I’m quite certain it won’t do a great job of addressing real issues.

Just to be fair, I tested three additional sites that made similar claims. none of them reported that I was in as bad shape as the first, but each one claimed I had pressing issues: 75, 42, and 39 — and none of them removed themselves cleanly either.

In fact, a couple of them left quite a bit on the computer including extra folders, files, and even entries in the ‘RUN’ section of the Registry (very bad form)!

The reality is that there is no one-size-fits-all solution to a slow computer. there are lots of great tools (many of them are free) that can help clean up your computer, the problem is that it takes a knowledgeable eye to know which tool to use when.
